Down By The Bay: Fatkini Edition

Last summer, a year into my fat acceptance journey, an amazing thing started to happen on the internet. I began to see all of these fabulous fat babes in fatkinis on blogs and on my dash on tumblr. In my own fat acceptance journey I was still an infant, but I admired these babes for their courage and I thought to myself "next year, next year I hope to be at that stage and able to don a kickass fatkini on the beach." The days passed and in the spring I began to scour the internet for the perfect fatkini to wear when we went up to the cottage. After a few months of hunting I finally found these high waisted bottoms on ModCloth. They were perfect, pretty much the bottom half of the bathing suit I had last summer, but I loved the look and I knew the brand fit well so I decided to go for it. ModlCloth also happened to have a killer sale on so I snatched these babies up and began to hunt for the top half to complete the look. It took me a little bit longer to find the perfect top, but Asos also had a sweet sale and I managed to pick the top up for under $20.00. The colour matched perfectly, and I loved the retro style. The only negative thing I can say is I am not sure who's ribs they measured when making the top but it is a little snug in that area. I intended to give it a bit of ease by adding a panel or something but I didn't have time to before we left. It was still comfortable enough to wear so I put on my new duds and went to the beach.

You might be ale to tell from the pictures but it was a little chilly and windy that day so I was wearing a sweater and shorts for a little while, but gosh darn I was going to wear that bikini at least once while we were away. Once it warmed up enough to take off my sweater I felt really comfortable wearing my fatkini for most of the afternoon. No one stared, no one laughed, no one made rude comments, and I finally felt like I belonged with all the other fat babes on the internet. It gave me so much confidence to be able to wear something like this, I wore it like a badge of honour. This is the first time I have ever worn a bikini in my entire life, and it felt so damn good. There is still some summer left in my corner of the world and I encourage all the fat babes I know and the ones I don't know to slip into your very own fatkini and go to the beach/a water park/ a pool whatever. Trust me it's not so scary, you will feel great, and you will definitely wonder why you never did it before. It's your turn to become part of the body confidence revolution.    

I've Been Sailing Along

It is finally nice enough to take outfit pictures outside. I usually work afternoon to evening shifts and I am never home early enough to take pictures outside, so this day was a rare occasion. I could wake up early and take pictures before work, but I am not a morning person and that just seems like too much work haha. I have been really digging 50s and nautical styles for a while now, you can never have too many pieces like that in your closet.

If you hadn't noticed I have really been having the sewing bug lately. I am really trying to stick to making or thrifting most of my clothes, and I have a huge stash that needs to be sewn up. I have wanted to make this particular shirt for a few months but I never had the time to do it until recently. Well not so much that I didn't have the time, but I didn't have the drive. For me I really have to be in the mood to make something in order for it to get finished. If I am really interested in a project than I am excited about it and more likely to see it through to the end. I just finished a pair of pants that I am pretty excited about, and the next project I think will be a 50s style sun dress.

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

I have been really enjoying skater skirts lately. I made that black one that I wear on here a lot (too much?)  a while ago and have since made two more, this blue one and a nice grey one. I have recently been buying up remnants and making super quick skirts with them too. Usually I am not into suede, but this particular group of suede was was very soft and light and I absolutely loved the colour. I love the way red and blue look together, so very nautical. I'm not sure why but I also kind of felt like a super hero in this outfit. Yup.

Planning the move has been going along at a good pace so far. We have a date picked that works for everyone, we have a truck booked, and our electricity should be set up for us when we get there. I was extremely shocked and annoyed when I found out that they charge you a deposit fee on top of the installation fee when you set up a new electricity account. I mean I figured they would charge you an installation, fee, but a deposit too? They wanted us to pay $240 if we couldn't get a letter of reference from the people we used in Halifax. Luckily Nova Scotia Power had us on file still and we were just under the cut off date to use them *phew*. I feel like everybody wants to charge you for anything they can these days. We still have to set up the internet and then the place is all set for us to move in. Now we just need to start collecting boxes from our respective work places and actually pack. I really hate packing, and we are amalgamating two households, but we still have three weeks so I am going to take my time. I get stressed out so easily, I need to make sure I just relax and hopefully the actual day will go smoothly. Does anyone have any moving tips and or tricks to share?

Treasure Hunting

I swear to goodness this skirt was not this wrinkled when I put it on in the morning. It's just one of those skirts that gets progressively more wrinkled throughout the day. I also wore it to work for an 8 hour shift so you know that might explain it too. I got this sweater the other day while I was taking a detour through the mall around 6pm to get to the bus station. All the stores were closing (because Jackson Square has stupid hours), but this place had a mega sale on their clothing and the sweater was marked down from $39.99 to $14.99! I have been trying to cut down on my spending lately and have been doing a pretty good job, but this sweater was too stinkin' cute to resist. It is definitely a great addition to my ever increasing nautical wardrobe. I feel like at this point I have enough to probably wear all nautical things for at least a week, maybe more. I think I have a problem.

I worked my second shift at my new job yesterday and I am really enjoying it so far. There are two different sites and the second one is so beautiful! The leaves are just starting to turn and I can tell it is going to be amazing once it is fully fall. The end of the day kind of sucked though. Colin and I were supposed to meet up with someone to view an apartment after work. I had to take the train home so I was going to just go straight to the place. I got into town and had a little bit of extra time so I got some food and then started to head over to the place. I tried to text Colin because he didn't know the address, but he wasn't responding. Then I tried calling, but I kept getting disconnected. Then I tried restarting my phone thinking it might be a signal issue from the train (it has happened before). Nothing. Next I tried a payphone (when the heck did they go up to 50 cents?!) but all I got was a busy signal over and over again. I decided to just go over to the place and wait there. I then proceeded to restart my phone a few times, send several texts and send an e-mail, all to no avail. At this point I was starting to panic. I waited until a little after 8pm and the landlord wasn't there yet so I walked up the street a few blocks looking for Colin. On the way I had learned from a passerby that the Rogers network was down in the city. Well, that explains the lack of contact, but man oh man what a time for that to happen. The one time I don't obsess about making solid plans. I finally found Colin who had just gotten downtown. It was a complete fluke, but I was relieved. He had also been trying to contact me for ages, and I explained about the phones being down. We walked back to the apartment and waited around for another 40 minutes but the dude never showed up. One of the tenants came by and offered to contact him since her phone was working, but he never responded. I am not sure what happened, probably something to do with the network being down. I am a little disappointed, mostly because it took forever to set up this appointment, and I hope he didn't come and go in the 5 minutes I was gone. Fingers crossed that we can schedule another time for a viewing. Apartment hunting can be really frustrating at times, but Colin keeps telling me to think of it like a treasure hunt so I am trying really hard to look at it like that. Does anyone else have any apartment hunting horror stories?

Beach Bod

My bathing beauty photoshoot. I know I wore this bathing suit last summer (so sue me I only have one bathing suit), but I only posted one picture and it was pretty crappy. Oh how things have changed in a year. 

Definitely not the least bit afraid to be posting bathing suit pics now. By next year I hope to have acquired a bikini. Yay for body positivity! These were taken at the cottage which is on Georgian Bay. It was one of the hottest days while we were there, perfect for swimming and lounging around. I still adore this bathing suit, it was the first thing I ever ordered from ModCloth. The shipping and duty fee nearly killed me (especially since I had no idea there was duty on top), but it was totally worth it. I only got to wear it once last summer, but I have used it a lot more frequently this year. Hopefully I can get a few more swims in at my aunt's pool before the summer is done.

Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay

This is one of my favourite outfits of the summer. I love the retro feel of the high-waisted shorts and vintage shirt together. This dock was a great place to take pictures given the slightly (once again) nautical feel of the look. Also it meant I got to use an Ottis Redding song as my title so everyone wins. I have had a hard time matching this shirt with some of my clothes so I am really pleased that it looks good with the shorts. I made almost everything I am wearing in this, how cool is that? Speaking of sewing, I haven't done any in almost a month. I really need to remedy that, my fingers are itching to get back to my machine.

During my sick haze this week I have watched the entirety of Twin Peaks. I have been meaning to watch it for a while now, a lot of the blogs I read are obsessed in love with it and it sounded pretty good. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the show up until the ending. I really liked the weird sci-fi/horror/drama mix. It is definitely hard to place it into any particular genre which is pretty neat. All of the characters were really well fleshed out and had great storylines. I really liked Cooper, Log Lady, Audrey and Andy. Things seemed to go a little askew halfway through the second season and sadly the ending was unsatisfactory, but I guess that's what I get for watching a show that was cancelled and left you with a cliff hanger. Have any of you watched Twin Peaks? What did you think about it?

Collingwood Pier

This is my cottage casual look. I was rocking shorts in the day with a sweater at night for most of the week. The first couple days up there were a bit chilly so I stuck to pants, but after Wednesday the sun came out and it was glorious. I wore this to go and see the Tall Ships come in to Collingwood (which is about an hour away from my aunt's cottage). The Tall Ships seem to be popping up a lot  in the last year, but they are pretty neat so I am glad I got to see them in a few different settings. The life preserver shirt seemed to fit nicely with the boating theme. Nautical never fails me.

I am really glad I had a week away, life has been crazy lately and I needed a break from the real world. I got to visit my family and my grandparents and hang out with cousins and laze about on the beach. Can't ask for more really. Unfortunately the crazy started as soon as I got back home again, but what can you do? If this doesn't make a whole lot of sense it's because I am sick at the moment. I am tired of sitting and doing nothing though so I decided to type up my couple of posts from the cottage. Expect a couple more over the course of the week.
